A special clandestine meeting took place, and the end result was that Euna Lee and Laura Ling are free, free to come home and not do time (12 years) in a hard labor camp!
Back on March 17thof this year the two journalists were arrested along the border with China and North Korea. The government of North Korea believed the two women were commiting acts of hostility against their nation. They, then were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in a prison camp.
Just thirty hours ago the two were released to an emotional reunion with immediate family members. It was wonderful to see the sheer love expressed by those whose hearts were wretched and ached to see their loved one for these many months.
The often secretive and isolated communist country of North Korea headed up by the ever interesting and scary leader Kim Jong Il, were embroiled in quiet diplomatic communications for months now. The negotiations resulted in former vice president Al Gore enlisting his friend former president Bill Clinton to help. With Clinton on board, the North Korean government felt respected that a “high-ranking” official had come to visit their nation. This had prompted the special pardon of the two journalist women.
While, we haven’t forgotten that Kim Jong Il is a threat in the weapons arena, as he continues to test nuclear weapons. Kim Jong Il and his regime has always wanted to world to know and wants the world to see NorthKorea as an import nation. He is after constant recognition and this will be widely reported in his country. He would also look bad in the eyes of other countries that do have some relations to the country such as Switzerland. The Swiss of recent, has had talks with Kim Jong Il that it does not look good that these reporters are being held for so long.
Our country offered to come with a high-ranking official and we have given them respect. We have offered nothing else. America will continue to give pressure in light of the recent nuclear test missiles launched. Our country as well as many of our allies, feel that this is illegal. Let’s hope that perhaps this mission could open the door to other successful missions, like the suspension of the nuclear weapons, and open relations to an isolated communistic country.
Until then, welcome home journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling! Let’s hope that it is a long time before you leave your families to go after a story that even our country’s administration says is feudal!
Just my thoughts, just my opinions, and always in a conversationaltone.
